ZAMBIA: Hakainde Hichilema Biography And Profile

Hakainde Hichilema was born on 4 June 1962 to a poor family in a village in the district of Monze. Life started out tough, but Hichilema’s grit and determination in pursuing his studies paid off when he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Zambia where he studied and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics and Business Administration.

He then went on to obtain an MBA degree in Finance and Business Strategy from the University of Birmingham in Britain.

Since then, Hichilema, affectionately known as ‘HH,’ has carved out an impressive track record in business, both locally and internationally.

Hichilema used his university education to break down social barriers and ascend to top positions in Zambia’s corporate world, landing prestigious jobs as CEO of Coopers and Lybrand at the tender age of 32 years old, from 1994 to 1998, and later as CEO of Cooper’s successor, Grant Thornton, from 1998 to 2006.

Hichilema is also a trained business negotiator and a member of the prestigious Zambia Institute of Directors. He has proved he has what it takes to succeed.

In running for the position of President, Hichilema is seeking to use his experiences as an entrepreneur, commercial farmer and businessman to help move Zambia forward, and create an environment in which others feel empowered and have the opportunity to succeed.

He believes good governance is essential for economic growth and development and is ready to devote all his time and energy to move Zambia forward and realise the nation’s huge potential.

Hichilema is not just a politician and a businessman, he is Christian and a philanthropist, donating to community activities and projects such as clinics, schools, sinking boreholes and building dams to enhance agriculture activities.

He is married to Mutinta and together they have three children—a girl and two boys.
