VENEZUELA POLITICS: Maduro Says Trump’s Mexico Wall Hurts All Latin Americans
“The construction of the wall is not just against Mexico, it is against all of Latin America,” said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to construct a wall alongside Mexico’s border affects all Latin Americans.
“We have great ideological and political differences with what President Trump is doing and we will show our opposition to him in all possible scenarios,” Maduro said.
“The construction of the wall is not just against Mexico, it is against all of Latin America.”
Maduro, who delivered his remarks during Venezuela’s annual “Anti-Imperialism Day” ceremony, said Trump wants to “lock the world of the North from the world of the South” with his immigration policies.
The socialist leader also bashed Trump’s treatment of Muslims, whom he said are being persecuted and criminalized.
“Today we stand up against the attempt of a holocaust against the Muslim people,” Maduro said.
The only solution to defeat Trump’s racism, Maduro said, is for Latin Americans and Muslims to unite and struggle together.
Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution launched “Anti-Imperialism Day” on March 9, 2015, when former U.S. president Barack Obama declared the country a “national security threat.” Since then, Maduro and the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela has used the occasion to raise awareness about global imperialism.
This wasn’t the first time Maduro spoke out against Trump.
Earlier this month, he blasted Trump’s “dangerous” right-wing ideology that he said is spreading across North America and Europe.
“I warn the whole world about the emergence of this dangerous segregationist, racist and xenophobic political current that threatens to attack the peoples of the world, to divide humanity more, and to create more wars around the world,” Maduro said, HispanTV reports.
“It’s a band of extremists who are taking over power in the most important countries of the so-called developed world … which, like Hitler, creates the supremacy of the white European race over the rest of the peoples of the world. It’s worrying.”
