SOUTH AFRICA POLITICS: Lindiwe Sisulu Name Added to ANC Presidential Race

The African National Congress (ANC) branch in Keiskammahoek in the Eastern Cape has put forward the name of ANC NEC member Lindiwe Sisulu as a presidential candidate to succeed President Jacob Zuma.

This brings a new twist to the succession tussle between Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The branch says Sisulu has the necessary experience and she is no stranger to the African National Congress.

The nomination process has not even begun yet, but the race is on.

The branch says it wants Sisulu to be the next president of the party and the country. Sisulu officiated at the launch of the renaming of this branch formally known as Ntabakandoda to ZR Mahabana, one of the ANC’s presidents in the 1920’s.

Branch Chairperson Siphiwo Venkile says:

“We want to plead with you Sisulu to please be the president. We know the process has not yet started, but the leagues have spoken out already.”

The branch also pronounced on ANC Provincial Secretary Oscar Mabuyane to be the provincial chairperson.

“I am saddened, because Oscar Mabuyane, who we invited is not here, but we want him to lead this province.”

Lindiwe Sisulu did not accept or decline the nomination. She says once the process opens she will come back to the branch to tell them if she will accept or decline the nomination.

The stakes are high as all provincial and presidential candidates put forward have strong credentials; Dlamini-Zuma, Ramaphosa and now Sisulu .

Provincially, outgoing Chairperson Phumulo Masualle, Provincial Secretary Oscar Mabuyane and rumours of former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas have also been nominated for the provincial chairperson position.

Jonas has since told the SABC that he will not be accepting the nomination.
