AUSTRALIA POLITICS: Larissa Waters Biography

Larissa Waters was born 8 February 1977, Winnipeg, Canada to Australian parents who were studying overseas and came to Australia when she was a baby, growing up in Brisbane.

Larissa Waters portfolios include environment & biodiversity; resources, mining & CSG; women; gambling and tourism. As the first Greens Senator for Queensland, Larissa took office in July 2011. Larissa is passionate about taking action on global warming, investment in job-rich clean energy, protecting our environment, creating a fairer society and achieving gender equality.

Larissa and the Greens helped harness the enormous community campaign to protect the Great Barrier Reef from coal port expansion. She established a Senate inquiry on the Great Barrier Reef which led to new laws prohibiting the dumping of dredge spoil in the Reef.

In 2015, during her tenure as the Greens global warming spokesperson, Larissa helped launch the Greens’ Renew Australia plan aiming to transition Australia to at least 90% clean energy by 2030 and to ensure a just transition for workers and communities.

Larissa established a Senate inquiry on domestic violence, contributing to successful campaign to stop some of the Liberal Government’s worst funding cuts to domestic violence services.

Larissa’s vision for Queensland is for a fair society and a clean economy which puts our people, our farmland and the Great Barrier Reef ahead of profits for big corporations, coal seam gas and coal mining.

Before entering the Senate, Larissa worked as an environmental lawyer in the community sector for 8 years helping communities to use the law to protect the environment and was named 2010 Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of the Year by the Law Council of Australia.
