Therefore, those planning to participate in this event, perhaps, should think that visiting the annexed Crimea, they actually approve and support the aggressive policy of the Russian leader, encourage aggression and, thus, become accomplices in crimes committed by Russia in the territory of Ukraine.

For Russian special services, it could be a great opportunity to recruit new Kremlin agents, and young people planning to attend the Sochi festival could become potential targets for them.

RUSSIA POLITICS: Kremlin Recruits New Agents of ‘Russian World’

On October 14–22, 2017, the Kremlin is planning to hold The World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi under slogan: “For peace, solidarity and social justice, we are fighting against imperialism — respecting our past, we are building our future”.

More than 20 000 young people from 150 countries of the world have been invited to this event. It is assumed, that young journalists, sportsmen, representatives of creative youth, leaders of political parties and youth organizations — “golden minds of the new generation” will gather in Sochi within one platform. Russian media and social networks are actively advertising the festival, its cultural program, planned events and thematic discussions.

This alone wouldn’t be a problem, if only some other things that make you think about the sincerity of the host country’s intentions. So, for example, the organizers of this festival offer to visit “Russian cities”, listed in the program of the event, among which the cities of the annexed Crimea are mentioned — Simferopol and Sevastopol.

But, as is known, the international community roundly condemned Russia’s actions in the light of the Crimean annexation and military aggression in the East of Ukraine. As the result, political and economic sanctions were imposed against Russia.

This fact suggests that one of the main objectives of such an international event, held by Kremlin, with a great number of invited foreign guests, and which program proposes visits to cities located in the territory of the annexed Crimea, is another attempt to legitimize the illegal annexation of the peninsula.

The organizers of the festival in Sochi deliberately do not display the following fact: the entry and exit of foreign citizens as part of official delegations or privately (that is provided by the festival’s program) into/from the territory of temporarily occupied Crimea and Sevastopol constitute a grave violation of the Ukrainian legislation, provisions of the international law, and it contradicts the UNGA Resolution №68/262 “Territorial integrity of Ukraine”. In turn, the violation of the rules of entry into the territory of Crimea will lead to the imposition of appropriate sanctions.

Therefore, those planning to participate in this event, perhaps, should think that visiting the annexed Crimea, they actually approve and support the aggressive policy of the Russian leader, encourage aggression and, thus, become accomplices in crimes committed by Russia in the territory of Ukraine.

The Kremlin consciously stakes on young generation, on young minds and souls, on people who, due to their limited life experience and young age, are not very good at politics, but are consumed with desire to see the world and to communicate with their peers and colleagues by studies or work from other countries. The Soviet Union also actively used to benefit from the practice of organizing and holding of youth events, to introduce into the minds of young generation of communist ideas and to educate young revolutionaries for the subsequent promotion of these ideas in other countries and bringing the leaders beneficial to the communist regime to power. And, in this sense the festival in Sochi is not an exception. For Russian special services, it could be a great opportunity to recruit new Kremlin agents, and young people planning to attend the Sochi festival could become potential targets for them.

The organizers of the festival are “correctly” silent over the fact that representatives of unrecognized Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic, where terrorists and extremists are now operating, freedom of speech is being curbed, and “dissidents” defending the integrity of Ukrainian territory are being oppressed, are planning to visit this event. And it should be kept in mind that without the support of the Kremlin, it is unlikely that these unrecognized republics had a chance for existence. In such a way Russia is trying to engage radical ideological elements, future professional revolutionaries and representatives of terrorist organizations to the ideological education.

Perhaps, those invited to the festival in Sochi, should not be bought by the slogans of Putin’s propagandists, and take a closer look at the true goals motivating the organizers of this event. Perhaps we should ask ourselves: is it worth taking part in an event sponsored and organized by an aggressor country, an occupying country, a country grossly violating international law, destabilizing the situation in neighboring countries, in Europe, in the world…
