CHINA POLITICS: Xi Jinping Lays Out Vision for ‘New Era’

CHINA POLITICS: Xi Jinping Lays Out Vision for ‘New Era’

“Through a long period of hard work, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, this is a new historical direction in our country’s development,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said, using the term “new era” 36 times.

“No country can alone address the many challenges facing mankind; no country can afford to retreat into self-isolation,” Xi told the delegates, among them Buddhist monks, Olympic medalists, farmers and at least one astronaut.

“We should not just mechanically copy the political systems of other countries,” he said. “We must unwaveringly uphold and improve party leadership and make the party still stronger.”

By 2050, hinese President Xi Jinping said, China would become a modern socialist “strong power” with leading influence on the world stage.

CHINA POLITICS: Chinese Money Leaking Into the World’s Housing Markets?

At this potent political moment, China — recently under increased scrutiny thanks to political rhetoric as well as political realities — is expressing its nationalism by cracking down on the “leak” of Chinese money out of the country. It’s not precisely the same kind of tribalistic, lines-in-the-sand economics practiced by the Alt Right in America, which is still wasting its time pining for jobs that aren’t coming back to America. CHINA POLITICS: China Says Taiwan Not a Country, Taiwan Says China Needs Reality Check

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said in reaction that relations across the Taiwan Strait that separates them are not “country to country” relations, and there is no “one China and one Taiwan”.

“Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, has never been a country and can never become a country,” Ma said.

“The mainland side resolutely opposes any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ words or action, and will never allow the historical tragedy of national separation to repeat itself. The consequences will be reaped for engaging in Taiwan independence separatism,” he added, without elaborating.

CHINA POLITICS: Beijing’s Anger at West to Overshadow Tougher Action on North Korea

Over the past week, China’s foreign ministry has repeatedly hit back at calls from Western countries and Japan for China for to do more to rein in North Korea, saying that pushing for dialogue was an equally integral part of the U.N. resolutions, and that escalating sanctions alone had been evidently ineffective.

“On the one hand, sanctions have continued to be put in place via resolutions and on the other hand North Korea’s nuclear and missile launch process is still continuing,” ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said last week.
