CHINA POLITICS: Xi Jinping Lays Out Vision for ‘New Era’

CHINA POLITICS: Xi Jinping Lays Out Vision for ‘New Era’

“Through a long period of hard work, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, this is a new historical direction in our country’s development,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said, using the term “new era” 36 times.

“No country can alone address the many challenges facing mankind; no country can afford to retreat into self-isolation,” Xi told the delegates, among them Buddhist monks, Olympic medalists, farmers and at least one astronaut.

“We should not just mechanically copy the political systems of other countries,” he said. “We must unwaveringly uphold and improve party leadership and make the party still stronger.”

By 2050, hinese President Xi Jinping said, China would become a modern socialist “strong power” with leading influence on the world stage.

CHINA POLITICS: Chinese Money Leaking Into the World’s Housing Markets?

At this potent political moment, China — recently under increased scrutiny thanks to political rhetoric as well as political realities — is expressing its nationalism by cracking down on the “leak” of Chinese money out of the country. It’s not precisely the same kind of tribalistic, lines-in-the-sand economics practiced by the Alt Right in America, which is still wasting its time pining for jobs that aren’t coming back to America. Rather, China wants to be sure that those of its citizens with the independent means to invest do so within the country’s borders.

PHILIPPINE POLITICS: China Gives 3,000 Assault Rifles to Philippines to Show Friendship Not Foe

“We are lucky that the Chinese government provided the firearms,” Philippines Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said at a news conference, where stacks of rifles were on display.

NORTH KOREA POLITICS: North Korean Workers Leave Chinese Border Hub Because of New Sanctions

The Wing Cafe used to advertise its “beautiful North Korean” waitresses on its shopfront by the Yalu. The sign is now gone, and cafe staff said the waitresses had returned home in recent weeks after their visas expired.

“There have been changes in government policy,” the manager of another restaurant said. “It’s not convenient to say more.”

The sanctions have come as a rude jolt to Dandong businesses and traders who had long rolled with North Korea’s unpredictability but believed their neighbour’s economic reliance on China would keep its belligerence in check.

RUSSIA POLITICS: Russia, China Slam New Unilateral US Sanctions

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov reacted to the new US sanctions by expressing disappointment and warning Washington that Moscow was preparing a response.

“The lip service from American representatives about the desire to stabilize bilateral relations [with Russia] is extremely unconvincing. In recent years, Washington in theory should have learned that for us, the language of sanctions is unacceptable, and the solutions to real problems are only hindered by such actions. So far, however, there doesn’t seem to be an understanding of such obvious truths. In the meantime, we are beginning to work out the inevitable response to this situation.”
