SYRIA POLITICS: US Provides Air Cover for Daesh in Syria: Russian Defense Ministry Says

In early October, the Russian Defense Ministry Russia accused the US forces of providing intelligence to the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in eastern Syria, saying Washington’s “flirtation” with the terrorists is the “main obstacle” to eradicate Daesh in Syria.

The accusations came after a group of Syrian forces came under a series of attacks by Daesh in the province of Dayr al-Zawr, where Syria is trying to push the terrorists out of their last strongholds in the region.

IRAQ POLITICS: US Eying ‘Long-Term’ Presence in Post-Daesh Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday that the US had begun drawing down its military presence and that US air power would no longer be needed once Daesh is entirely obliterated.

Yet, on Thursday, Lt. Gen. Paul Funk, the US commander of the US-led coalition, hinted that the US needed to prepare for “long-term” presence in Iraq.

“I think we need to structure ourselves to be prepared for a long-term commitment to building partner capacity in this area,” Funk told USA TODAY. “I think that is exactly the way we’re leaning but that will be a decision for the policymakers.”

Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military’s General Staff said that Russian jets hit 993 Daesh targets in the area of Dayr al-Zawr alone in 383 sorties over the past week. He also noted that the area under the control of Daesh has shrunk to 14,800 square kilometers (5,714 square miles), or less than 8 percent of Syrian territory.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.

“The sudden strikes destroyed a number of terrorist command posts, fortifications, military hardware as well as ammunition depots,” Konashenkov said in a statement.

The senior Russian military official went on to say that all destroyed targets were far away from residential areas, the positions of the US-backed militiamen from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, and US troops.
