AUSTRALIA POLITICS: Turnbull Has Set Up Showdown With Conservative MPs Over Same-Sex Marriage

A gay marriage bill proposed by West Australian Liberal senator Dean Smith came under attack yesterday after it received the written endorsement of Labor Senate leader Penny Wong and Greens leader Richard Di Natale under a process approved by Mr Turnbull.

Speaking in Manila, Mr Turnbull said it was “up to the parliament” to resolve the shape of any same-sex marriage legislation and repudiated stronger protections for service providers with conscientious objections to gay weddings as having “virtually no prospect” of passing the parliament.

AUSTRALIA POLITICS: Drop ‘Protection Racket’, Refer John Alexander to High Court: Federal Opposition Says

Senator Wong said Mr Turnbull’s proposal was “not good enough” and should not be used to cover up Mr Alexander’s woes.

“John Alexander needs to be referred to the High Court,” she said. “Mr Turnbull should not allow the House of Representatives to turn into a protection racket for John Alexander and anyone else simply because Mr Turnbull doesn’t want to risk his numbers on the floor of the House.”

Mr Alexander’s case will loom large over Mr Turnbull’s talks with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Wednesday, as the pair meet in Melbourne to discuss the Coalition’s plan to end the crisis with new citizenship disclosure rules for all MPs.

AUSTRALIA POLITICS: Speedy Ruling on Citizenship Crisis Not Guaranteed: High Court Says

“The court is aware of the need for a speedy decision, but it is not always possible to do so immediately,” said chief justice, Susan Kiefel.

The court’s decision will determine whether Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull can maintain his shaky grip on power. Should the court rule that Joyce, the sole lower house lawmaker caught up in the crisis, is ineligible, Turnbull will need to win the support of one of three independent lawmakers to keep his minority government.

AUSTRALIA POLITICS: New Australia Warships to be Equipped With Long-Range Missile Systems: Turnbull

“Recent events in our region have proven that Australia’s future frigates must be equipped to defend Australia from the threat of medium- and long-range missile attacks,” said Malcolm Turnbull during a speech in Sydney in an apparent reference to North Korean missile tests.
He further added that the new warships would be operating in “a complex and growing threat environment.”

“By bringing together the proven Aegis system, with a cutting edge Australian tactical interface developed by SAAB Australia, our future frigates will have the best capability to defeat future threats above and below the surface,” he underlined.

AUSTRALIA POLITICS: The Case for Welfare Card Takes Center Stage

Bill Shorten said he could see pluses and minuses with the welfare card:

“The one thing I know about trials is they have to be genuine trials. We have to make sure that the community supports it. We have to make is that you are if people are suffering from addiction there is all the support to help them break the cycle of the addiction, as opposed to just the heavy-handed terms of this card. Labor is going to wait until we see all of the results. We’ve got an open mind but the community has got to want to support it. What I don’t want to see is genuine people who are down on their luck being treated with hard measures just to get a headline in the big cities.”

Army chief Peter Leahy said, “I think we need to perhaps take a deep breath and … run as quickly and as hard as we can down the diplomatic and the economic options, because it’s a pretty horrid thought to think that in the space of just a few days — a week or more — we could be at war. We’re not talking about a few guns, we’re talking about tens of thousands of guns, and stockpiled artillery. So they’d be able to inflict, very quickly on Seoul, massive damage.”
