SYRIA POLITICS: As Assad Cements Victories, UK, US Say Will Rebuild Syria

“We believe that the only way forward is to get a political process going and to make it clear to the Iranians, Russians and Assad regime that we, the like-minded group, will not support the reconstruction of Syria until there is such a political process and that means, as Resolution 2254 says, to a transition away from Assad,” British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said, referring to a resolution adopted at the UN Security Council in 2015.

NORTH KOREA POLITICS: Kim Jong Un Says Seeking Military ‘Equilibrium’ With United States

“Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the U.S. and make the U.S. rulers dare not talk about military option,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was quoted as saying by the state news agency, KCNA.

Kim Jong Un was shown beaming as he watched the missile fly from a moving launcher in photos released by the agency, surrounded by several officials.

“The combat efficiency and reliability of Hwasong-12 were thoroughly verified,” said Kim Jong Un as quoted by KCNA. Kim added the North’s goal of completing its nuclear force had “nearly reached the terminal”.

NORTH KOREA POLITICS: Kim Jong Un Threatens to Reduce US to ‘Ashes and Darkness’, ‘Sink’ Japan

The 15-member Security Council voted unanimously on a U.S.-drafted resolution and a new round of sanctions on Monday in response, banning North Korea’s textile exports that are the second largest only to coal and mineral, and capping fuel supplies. The North reacted to the latest action by the Security Council, which had the backing of veto-holding China and Russia, by reiterating threats to destroy the United States, Japan and South Korea.

“Let’s reduce the U.S. mainland into ashes and darkness. Let’s vent our spite with mobilization of all retaliation means which have been prepared till now,” the statement said.

“The four islands of the archipelago should be sunken into the sea by the nuclear bomb of Juche. Japan is no longer needed to exist near us,” the committee said in a statement carried by the North’s official KCNA news agency.

NORTH KOREA POLITICS: Defiant Pyongyang Vows ‘Practical Equilibrium With US’

In its first official reaction to the sanctions resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the sanctions would only strengthen the country’s resolve to pursue its nuclear weapons program “at a faster pace without the slightest diversion.”

North Korea remained defiant saying it would “redouble the efforts to increase its strength to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and right to existence” and establish “practical equilibrium with the U.S.”

USA POLITICS: Why Does Trump Think We Need More Military Spending?

USA POLITICS: Why Does Trump Think We Need More Military Spending?

Trump feels we need to re-invest in nuclear weapons, while at the same time insisting he wants to be the first president to reside in an age where no country has them. That’s an entirely farcical statement for a leader with a guaranteed four-year term to make, both because it’s not enough time for the world to disarm, and because adding to our nuclear arsenal only provokes other nuclear powers.

CHINA POLITICS: Beijing’s Anger at West to Overshadow Tougher Action on North Korea

Over the past week, China’s foreign ministry has repeatedly hit back at calls from Western countries and Japan for China for to do more to rein in North Korea, saying that pushing for dialogue was an equally integral part of the U.N. resolutions, and that escalating sanctions alone had been evidently ineffective.

“On the one hand, sanctions have continued to be put in place via resolutions and on the other hand North Korea’s nuclear and missile launch process is still continuing,” ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said last week.

North Korea’s envoy told the same forum the North’s nuclear deterrent would never be up for negotiation, echoing Pyongyang’s regular denunciation of U.S. “aggression”.

CANADA POLITICS: Canada Tackling Refugees Surge From United States

Most of the new arrivals are Haitians who face expulsion from the United States at the end of the year. Then, temporary asylum granted to 60,000 Haitians affected by a devastating 2010 earthquake is due to expire. Their numbers have soared from about 400 in May to 3,800 in the first weeks of August. Under a Canada-US agreement, asylum seekers traveling through the United States would be turned away at Canadian border checkpoints and told to file a refugee claim in the United States. The Canada-US border is the longest between any countries in the world. There are no fences along the vast stretches of dense forests and mountainous terrain, and security is relatively low.

AUSTRALIA POLITICS: Keep Away From ‘Bloody Ugly’ War With Kim Jong-un: Former Army Chief Peter Leahy Warns Turnbull

Army chief Peter Leahy said, “I think we need to perhaps take a deep breath and … run as quickly and as hard as we can down the diplomatic and the economic options, because it’s a pretty horrid thought to think that in the space of just a few days — a week or more — we could be at war. We’re not talking about a few guns, we’re talking about tens of thousands of guns, and stockpiled artillery. So they’d be able to inflict, very quickly on Seoul, massive damage.”

“It’s going to look bloody ugly.”
