GERMANY POLITICS: Jews Worldwide Worried By Far-Right AfD Breakthrough in German Election

Ronald Lauder, president of the New York-based World Jewish Congress, called Chancellor Angela Merkel a “true friend of Israel and the Jewish people” and decried the AfD’s gains at a time when anti-Semitism was increasing across the globe.

“It is abhorrent that the AfD party, a disgraceful reactionary movement which recalls the worst of Germany’s past and should be outlawed, now has the ability within the German parliament to promote its vile platform,” Lauder said.

“A party that tolerates right-wing extremist thinking in its ranks and incites hatred against minorities …will now be represented in parliament and nearly all state legislatures,” Central Council of Jews in Germany president Josef Schuster said in a statement.

“I expect our democratic forces to expose the true nature of the AfD and its empty, populist promises,” he added.

GERMANY POLITICS: Not Again! German Media Bemoan Grand Coalition Scenario After Limp TV Duel

Newspaper Handelsblatt said Schulz had not really attacked the incumbent chancellor, adding: “Martin Schulz doesn’t want to be chancellor in September apparently but rather Angela Merkel’s office manager.”

“When it came to showing hard edges, Martin Schulz was more convincing,” it said, adding, “this evening may have changed things.”

Merkel told the Rheinische Post newspaper she expected the debate to spark great public interest. “I’ll be happy if as many people as possible take the time to watch,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

“I hope you were able to understand some of that even though some of you out there kept on yelling,” a glum-looking Merkel said near the end of her speech to 1,500 people.

“Some believe the problems in Germany can be fixed by screaming – but I don’t think so and the majority of the people here don’t think so either,” said Merkel, who is seeking a fourth term in office and is the heavy favourite to win the Sept. 24 election.

“Some people can’t do anything else but scream and shout – but we’re not going to let them lead us astray.”

By honouring those who died doing forced labour for Adolf Hitler’s regime and learning their stories, pupils gain a clearer, more visceral understanding of their country’s crimes 75 years ago.

“It is very important for us to bring our pupils closer to what happened to make sure it never happens again,” said Annemarie Sardisong, the school’s head teacher. “Especially now when the world seems to be coming out of joint.”

Despite all this, Merkel’s conservatives, who currently share power with the SPD in a “grand coalition”, look on track to win the Sept. 24 vote.
