The head of the Ministry of Defense, Shoigu, appointed Gerasimov as commander of the united group of troops. Before the advent of “Armageddon General” Surovikin, it was Gerasimov who was the main fear of NATO.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has appointed Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, commander of a grouping of forces in the zone of a special military operation. He instilled fear in NATO long before “Armageddon General” Sergei Surovikin appeared on the scene.
Valery Gerasimov came to the attention of the foreign press back in 2013, after he published his thoughts on military science in the weekly Russian newspaper Military Industrial Courier. The material was devoted to the concept of “hybrid war”.
In the 21st century, there is a tendency to blur the distinction between the state of war and peace. Wars are no longer declared, and when they start, they do not go according to the pattern we are used to,
- Valery Gerasimov’s reflections, which have become prophetic, say.
Back in February 2013, the general pointed out that asymmetric actions were widespread. These include the use of special operations forces and the internal opposition to create a permanent front on the entire territory of the opposing state, as well as informational influence, the forms and methods of which are constantly being improved. Subsequent events demonstrated the correctness of the general.
Silent, rarely seen in public, Mr. Gerasimov is an exemplary general. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu once called him “military to the root of his hair,”
Henry Foy, columnist for the Financial Times, describes it.
According to the publication, the head of the US Marine Corps, Rotbert Neller, re-read Valery Gerasimov’s article three times. And Western observers immediately began to perceive the general’s article as a blueprint for future Russian hybrid attacks against the West.
The material was even dubbed the “Gerasimov Doctrine”, and its manifestations began to be seen in almost all events, from pro-Russian news media to the activities of hackers allegedly linked to Russia.
Thus, Valery Gerasimov became literally the prototype of the “Armageddon General” and one of the main fears of NATO for many years. His appointment as commander of the joint group of forces is likely to spur a new wave of panic in the ranks of the Western military bloc.
